James Six di Canterbury è oggi ricordato per avere ideato nel 1782 un termometro capace di indicare la temperatura massima e quella minima raggiunte durante un determinato periodo di tempo. Il suo strumento, con poche modifiche, è ancor oggi assai diffuso come strumento di uso domestico. Nel 1794 fu pubblicato postumo, a Londra, un suo libro dal titolo The Construction and Use of a Thermometer for Shewing the Extremes of Temperature in the Atmosphere, during the Observer's Absence, together with Experiments and Variations of Local Heat; and other Meteorological Observations nel quale illustra i suoi termometri.
